Buffalo Street Farm is seeking an enthusiastic
apprentice to assist with farm tasks for the remainder of the 2014 growing
season (September-November). An
ideal apprentice will be reliable and punctual and have a strong interest
production based urban farming. This is a paid part-time (14 hour/week)
seasonal nine-week apprenticeship.
About
the Farm:
Buffalo Street Farm is a 3/4-acre urban
farm located in Northeast Detroit.
Produce from Buffalo Street Farm helps supply Detroit’s largest community
supported agriculture (CSA) program, City Commons, as well as local markets
with a wide variety of produce. Owners and longtime growers Chris McGrane and
Minehaha Forman only use organic methods and take pride in contributing to the
beatification of their neighborhood.
Work Description:
Apprentice will:
•
Assist with harvest and market/ CSA preparations.
•
Complete jobs that require physical labor such as shoveling and moving compost
•
Assist with bed preparation and ongoing tasks like weeding and watering
•Keep
a schedule and have reliable transportation
•
Assist with regular chores such as cleaning harvest bins, putting away tools
after workday, etc
Qualifications:
Must
be 18 years or older
Must
have at least 3 months experience in gardening or farming
Must
be physically able to complete farms tasks
The
ideal candidate:
•
Has at least 6 months of experience that demonstrates interest in gardening/agriculture
•
Is excited to gain experience in urban agriculture and impact local food
systems
•
Has a strong work ethic and is very
reliable
•
Is self-motivated and positive, takes direction easily, is curious and excited
to learn
•
Has a long-term goal of working in urban agriculture or related food system
work
Compensation: This is an
hourly position paying $8/hr
